Genuine Handmade
Every Piece is Handmade by Me
In a world of mass production and imported goods, I want you to know exactly who made your purchase: me, Nancy, working in my Kentucky studio.
There are no employees, no assembly lines, no outsourcing. Every paper flower, every piece of jewelry, every bookmark, ornament, and journal you see in my shop is crafted entirely by my hands. When you buy from Court Street Journals, you're supporting a genuine one-woman artisan business.
The Art of Upcycling Literature
My work begins with books—not just any books, but carefully selected volumes chosen for two essential qualities:
Literary Merit: I work with classic literature, poetry, and meaningful texts that deserve a second life. From Edgar Allan Poe to vintage sheet music, each book I choose has cultural and artistic value.
Paper Quality: Not all book paper is created equal. I select books printed on high-quality pages. My custom flowers are made from acid-free paper that will stand the test of time. This ensures your handmade piece remains beautiful for years to come.
Nothing Goes to Waste
I believe in honoring every part of the books I work with. In my studio, every page, every cover, every element finds purpose:
• Pages become delicate paper flower petals, elegant jewelry, ornaments and decorative bookmarks. Even the left over scraps are shredded for packing material.
• Covers are transformed into sturdy journal covers and flower arrangement bases
• Spines and endpapers add character to mixed-media pieces and bookmarks
• Even small scraps are incorporated into embellishments and details
This zero-waste approach isn't just environmentally responsible—it's a way of respecting the craftsmanship that went into creating these books in the first place.
The Process: Slow, Intentional, Authentic
Each piece I create goes through multiple stages of handwork:
Selection: I carefully choose which book and which pages to use for each project
Cutting: Every petal, every earring component is hand-cut with precision
Staining: I hand-stain papers to achieve vintage, aged aesthetics or vibrant colors
Assembly: Each piece is assembled by hand, one at a time
Finishing: I seal and protect my jewelry using my proprietary process to ensure durability
This isn't fast work. A single paper rose can take 60 minutes to complete. A journal might take several days. But that's the point—handmade means hand-made, not machine-made.
From My Studio in Kentucky to Your Home
My studio is located in Kentucky, in a separate building on my homestead, where I've been perfecting my craft for over 15 years. Every order is packaged with care in my studio, and I personally take each package to the shipper.
When you receive your order, you'll find:
• A card identifying which book your piece was made from
• Care instructions to help your handmade item last
• Gift-ready packaging (because presentation matters)
• The satisfaction of knowing you supported genuine American craftsmanship
Why "Handmade" Matters
In an era of drop-shipping and mass production, true handmade artisans are becoming rare. When you choose handmade, you're choosing:
Quality over quantity – Each piece receives individual attention
Sustainability – Upcycling gives books new purpose instead of landfill
Uniqueness – No two pieces are exactly alike
Connection – You know exactly who made your item and where
Preservation – Classic literature lives on in a new form
Thank you for supporting genuine handmade artistry. Your purchase allows me to continue doing what I love—transforming forgotten books into treasured keepsakes, one piece at a time.
